Motorists sometimes contribute to the causes of semitruck crashes

On Behalf of Keeton Law Firm, PLLC | Feb 19, 2024 | Auto Accidents

Semitrucks play a vital role in the nation’s economy by delivering goods across vast distances. These behemoths of the road are also involved in some of the most catastrophic accidents, with causes stemming from various sources.

While the sheer size and weight of semitrucks might suggest that their operators are often the initiators of road mishaps, other motorists can significantly contribute to the occurrence of these crashes as well. Understanding how this can happen may benefit drivers who want to stay safe when traveling and those who want to understand why injurious crashes have occurred in the past.

Driving in a trucker’s blind spots

One of the primary ways other motorists cause semitruck crashes is by driving in the semitruck’s blind spots, often referred to as no-zones. Semitrucks have significantly larger blind spots than standard vehicles, including areas directly behind, in front and on both sides of the rig. Motorists who linger in these zones make it challenging for the trucker to see them, which increases the risk of collisions when the 18-wheeler changes lanes or slows down.

Abrupt lane changes and cutting off

Semitrucks require more time and distance to stop or adjust their path. When other drivers cut in front of a semitruck abruptly or change lanes without sufficient space, the trucker may make sudden stops or evasive maneuvers. These actions can lead to loss of control, jackknifing or even overturning, causing severe accidents.

Tailgating

Despite being a dangerous practice around any vehicle, tailgating a semitruck is particularly hazardous. The driver of a following car has limited visibility ahead and may not anticipate sudden stops or changes in the semitruck’s speed. In the event of a collision, the smaller vehicle risks sliding under the trailer, leading to catastrophic outcomes.

Ultimately, innocent people can suffer horrible injuries when other drivers aren’t driving appropriately around semitrucks. When this occurs, crash victims may opt to pursue a personal injury claim. These matters can be complex, so having legal assistance is a good idea.
