Not only is tailgating one of the most frustrating behaviors to deal with on the road, but it’s also dangerous. Without a safe following distance, a tailgater may crash into you when you make a sudden stop, perhaps due to traffic or an obstacle.
So, what can you do if someone tailgates you?
Remain calm
It can be challenging to stay relaxed when someone is tailgating you. But signaling them to stop, slamming your brakes to “send a message,” speeding up to increase the following distance or gesturing through the window could lead to further problems. They distract you from driving, could antagonize the tailgater or cause the police to stop you for aggressive driving.
Let them pass
A driver may tailgate you because they are in a hurry – they may believe you are driving too slowly. So, they opt to pressure you to increase your speed. While their action is unjustified, you should let them pass when it’s safe. When the driver passes, do not engage in conversation or eye contact, as this can escalate matters.
If you don’t find a safe opportunity to let the other driver overtake you, consider pulling over to the side of the road or into a gas station. You want somewhere that’s safe and well-lit, especially if it’s at night. Don’t be afraid to call the police if you believe the driver is following you with ill intentions.
If a tailgater rear-ends you and causes you to suffer injuries and damages, consider legal guidance to know your options to receive the compensation you deserve.
