Vehicles feature numerous components to ensure optimum performance. For a vehicle to perform as it should, all of these components need to be working properly. Performance is not the only priority, though. Vehicles should also be set up to increase safety.
Headlights are crucial, particularly at night and when the weather restricts visibility. For headlights to do their job, they have to be properly aligned. Ultimately, misaligned headlights increase the risk of an accident, and here’s why.
You need to be able to see
Headlights that are working correctly allow you to see the road in front of you as well as pedestrians, other vehicles and any other potential hazards. They also illuminate road signs, so that you know where to turn off or when to slow down.
Poorly aligned headlights will fail to do this, which increases the chances of an accident. Of course, the same principles apply to other drivers whose headlights are not aligned properly.
You could blind other drivers
There is a balance between a driver optimizing their visibility and not impeding the vision of others. Headlights that point too high pose a serious threat to other drivers. If a driver is facing an oncoming vehicle with headlights that point upwards, the glare of the light could temporarily blind them. Even if they are only blinded for a second or two, the end result could still be a catastrophic collision.
