How to spot a distracted driver

On Behalf of Keeton Law Firm, PLLC | Jan 13, 2022 | Personal Injury

When operating a vehicle, your sole focus should be on the road, environment and any potential hazards. The reality is, all drivers are faced with a series of distractions every time they go out.

Fortunately, the majority of people are able to disregard distractions and focus on getting to their destination safely. However, this is not the case for all drivers. Sadly, approximately 8 people are killed every day as a result of distracted driving accidents. The consequences of a momentary lapse in concentration can be devastating. Thus, it is important to recognize the signs of a distracted driver. Outlined below are some clues that a driver may be distracted.

Is the vehicle crossing lanes?

The roads in Tennessee tend to be marked with centerlines. This makes it fairly easy to spot if a driver is straying from their lane. If the vehicle in front of you crosses lanes or drifts from the centerline, it could be a sign that they are distracted. Under such circumstances, it is advisable to give that vehicle ample room, to avoid a potential collision.

Do they stay stopped when the traffic light goes green?

Vehicles commonly hold up those behind them when failing to move when the lights turn green at an intersection. Sometimes, this can be an honest mistake but often it is a sign of distraction. It is vital that road users are fully aware of their surroundings, and some road users see a red light as an opportunity to check their cell phone or grab something to eat. Even if they are alerted and eventually move on, you should remain mindful that the distraction may not yet have ceased.

Distracted driving across Tennessee is a serious issue that warrants careful consideration. If you have been injured on a journey, you may have a legal path to compensation.
